Observation on Teachers

1. Planning for Teaching

I have observed that my supervisor used his lesson plans based on lessons, activities, and focused on the daily learning. He prepared different materials for different class. He always use different media as a teaching material that can attract the students so that they will not get bored during the learning process in the classroom.

As far as I can conclude, this strategy is effective in teaching and learning in high school. In the beginning of the class, he provided group or individual activities to remind the students about the previous lesson. So that students can connect the previous lesson and the lesson at that day. For more understanding of the students, he also provided group or individual activities before the end of the class.

During my observation, I have observed not only professional teachers, but also the student-teachers that conduct their practice of teaching. From what I have observed, they also conduct individual and group activities before they discuss further about the lesson at that day.

Those kind of activities (individual or group) are provided three domains of learning; cognitive, affective and psychomotor. By those activities, students can contribute and participate in the classroom, so that the role of the students in the class are dominant.

I do believe that this method will enable students to maximize their ability in solving problems, logic and gaining their critical thinking. More than that, students also can improve their ability in socialize and work together in groups. So that, in the future students can have good skills in many aspects for their better future life.

2. Preparing lessons and materials

Teachers always prepare the lesson before their teaching, like preparing lesson plan, preparing materials either making materials. They prepared everything step by step so that the learning objectives will be achieved. They also used media learning like chart, pictures, and many other things to help students get more understanding in the lesson.

3. Teaching in class

For teaching activities, the class would be started by praying. Then they would ask the secretary for the class’ attendance then conduct the teaching activities which based on the E5’s lesson plan.

Engage. To engage means to excite and to draw the students’ curiosity. It means to “wow” them in a way that catches their attention. It is not forcing students to learn but inviting them to do so. This is how lessons are introduce. It does not have to be difficult or overly detailed just interesting enough to open students minds for the learning process to begin.

Explore. After the teachers successfully catches the students’ attention, in this part they would be explored to get their more curiosity. They would be asked some question before the teachers began the lesson.

Explain. Students now have an opportunity to hear from their teachers. The teachers’ role so far has been to mainly facilitate learning, now they can use their expertise to answer questions students may have about what they are learning. They also may pose questions to the student to see what they are able to explain what they have learned. Checking for misunderstandings helps the teacher to observe what objectives need to be clarified or taught.

Elaborate. Here the students can participate in an extension or a different activity that either re-teaches an objective or teaches more details about the concept being taught. Here differentiation can be used. Based on the observation, the elaborate could be conducted by group or individual activities, depend on the lesson. These activities are used to get more emphasize on their understanding for the lesson at that day

Evaluate. Finally, after the objectives are taught, it is time to assess. What have students effectively learned? What do they not understand? Based on the observation, I saw that most of the assessment were using some questions or quiz about the topic. This is how teachers emphasize the lesson to get the high understanding of the students.

4. Measurement and Evaluation

After 60-minutes of teaching, teachers would give the students some evaluations such as worksheet, or individual and group works. Their works will be checked and recorded by the teachers, and will be returned to the students. So that students can know if their works are good or not. And based of that, they can evaluate their works to get better score in the future.
